In the past few decades, the idea of “choice” has become one of the defining values of modern culture. People are encouraged to choose their identity, choose their future, choose their truth, and even choose whether an unborn child should live or die. Anything that promises personal freedom, self-fulfillment, or independence is often celebrated.
Yet there is another choice that receives far less attention today: the choice of motherhood.
According to Scripture, motherhood is not merely biology or social expectation. It is a sacred calling that embraces sacrifice, responsibility, commitment, and love. It is a choice that values life, submits to God’s design, and looks beyond temporary comfort toward something eternal.Today, many view family life as restrictive or burdensome. But God’s Word presents motherhood as honorable, life-giving, and deeply valuable.
A Mother Chooses to Give Life
One of the clearest examples of courageous motherhood is found in Exodus 1. Pharaoh commanded the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill every Hebrew baby boy at birth.
The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. - Exodus 1:17
These women had no political power, no protection, and no influence. Yet they risked everything to preserve life because they feared God more than they feared Pharaoh. Motherhood begins with recognizing the value of life. In every generation, evil seeks to destroy life and weaken the family. The fear of God, however, produces courage to protect and nurture life even when culture moves in the opposite direction. The choice these women made was not based on convenience, popularity, or personal fulfillment. It was rooted in obedience to God.
A Mother Builds a Home
That same passage in Exodus continues by saying:
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own - Exodus 1:21
The word used here points not merely to children, but to households and homes. Scripture presents the home as a blessing from God, a place of stability, growth, discipline, care, and protection. Today, many people view the home as something limiting, something to escape in pursuit of greater freedom. Yet God designed the home to be a place where life flourishes. Proverbs 31 gives a beautiful picture of this kind of faithful homemaking:
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. - Proverbs 31:27
A mother understands the significance of home life. Through sacrifice, wisdom, consistency, and care, she creates an environment where others can grow and thrive. Motherhood is not simply about giving birth but about building a home.
A Mother Chooses to Nurture
In Exodus 2, we read about Jochebed, the mother of Moses. After giving birth during a time of danger and persecution, she courageously protected and cared for her son.
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. - Exodus 2:9
Jochebed nourished Moses, protected him, and raised him in the knowledge of who he truly was. Later, Hebrews 11 explains that Moses rejected the fleeting pleasures and treasures of Egypt because of faith. A mother’s nurturing goes far beyond meeting physical needs. God uniquely designed mothers to provide comfort, guidance, discipline, protection, and care. Their influence shapes hearts, values, and faith in powerful ways. There is perhaps no greater testimony to faithful motherhood than children who grow up loving Christ more than the world. Nurturing is not easy. It requires sacrifice, patience, endurance, and daily faithfulness. Yet through that quiet work, God works to shape future generations.
Motherhood Is Honorable
Scripture commands us:
Honor your father and your mother... - Exodus 20:12
Motherhood is honorable because:
- it is God-ordained
- it gives life
- it builds families
- it requires continual sacrifice
- it has unspeakable value
The world often celebrates self-fulfillment and independence, but biblical motherhood points toward something greater: selfless love, faithful service, and obedience to God’s design. Motherhood is not something to escape from. It is something worth honoring, protecting, and fighting for. In a culture increasingly confused about identity, purpose, and family, Scripture still presents motherhood as good, beautiful, and deeply valuable.
